My first movie review is about "The Wave". The wave is based on a real story. The true story was in Palo Alto, CA (USA), in April 1967. Recorded in Germany this year. The story plays in a general city, so it is not necessary in which town the story plays, because it could be in your town too.
In this town was a school with a project-week. The project is about forms of goverment. The teacher who is the main actor teachs the topic "autocrazy". The pupils are still thinking, that a dictatorship can not be return at Germany, because the people learned from the second world war.
After a break, the teacher is setting up all tables in strong rows. He is starting a project in a project to show the pupils what a community can be. All pupils have to sit silent and with an upright body. He is talking with the guys about community, power and discipline.
At the next day, the pupils organized by themself a community. They sit down upright and silent. A community need a name to be serious, so -the wave- was born now. The teacher is now the leader and the pupils are as from now normal people. Everbody can do something for the wave. One guy creates for example a logo. All pupils have to wear white t-shirts tomorrow, like an uniform to show each other 'I'm from the wave'. It works fine for the most...
But the uniform was the first problem for one girl, she is breaking the rule, because she doesn't like the system. The first opposition.
All other pupils love the new system and the powerful energy. It is just a good feeling to be in a powerful team, they can never see the real problems which are coming with this system. After the second day, they knock out other people with another opinion and nobody said - NO like 'we can't knock out other people with another opinion'.
All in all it was like the 'Hitler-system'. The most people like the system. They are no bad people, they can not see the problems, because they are infected by the system. And they are infected because they have no strong own opinion. They love it to listen a leader and to do what the leader wants.
The result is, that people with other opinions have no chance to say what they want. They will be punished as soon as possible, normaly directly...
The peak was arrived at the last day of the project-week. All members from the wave have to come to a meeting about the future. The leader is talking about the -good- points from the wave, like "we are powerful", "we can change what we want" or "nobody can stop us". All pupils are loving the words from the -dictator-.
After this words, he opened the eyes from all victims by the system. At the beginning the pupils said: 'nobody is so silly to join a such system again'.
But it was to easy: you need only a confident leader and people who need a person with a vision and good language skills. The leader's opinion is allways correct, the victim doesn`t need any own opinion. You can do what the leader wants and all other people are friendly to you, because they are in the system too. After a short time, your own brain is shutted down. Now, you are only a stupid roboter. If the leader says: kill this guy! you will do it without a problem. Welcome in the system.
The last scene after this is a really hard shock, you have to see it by yourself to understand it. I won't let you know what the ending is...
Okay, this was my little summary about the movie ;). Let's go to the regular questions.
I like this movie, because it is a realistic movie, based on a true story. Everbody can be a victim by a such system. You have to open your eyes to see what is going wrong. And if you see that there is something going wrong, you have to say STOP, THIS IS NO WAY.
The question 'What does the film say about your country and culture?" is difficult in reference to this movie. This story can be at all places on world. In Germany it was realisitc for a long time, sadly.
The german film industry is not very successful. But I like the movies, for example the wave.
Holywood films are with an other style, so you can not compare it really.
4) Are there are restrictions on what kinds of films can be made or shown in your country? Who makes these restrictions? Are they clearly written rules or just social guidelines most people follow?
In Germany is an "USK" system. You can only watch a movie if you are old enough. Very dirty movies will be kicked by the normal human mind.
The media are trying all the time to set the level more and more worse. I think, that in German is the level better than in america. This opinion is based on 5 days at my homestay tv.
Mhhh..... my review is maybe a little bit to long, sorry :)

Hi David -
Finally managed to read your review, and I'm impressed. Clearly you put a lot of effort into it, and you've explained a very complicated film in a lot of detail.
Here is some feedback.
Generally, I think your review is quite clear, and there are only a few parts where I'm not sure about your meaning.
This sentence, for instance: 'After this words, he opened the eyes from all victims by the system.' Not sure if you mean that the victims became aware of the system, or that the leader became aware of what he had created.
And I'm not sure about this part: 'Very dirty movies will be kicked by the normal human mind. (???)
'The media are trying all the time to set the level more and more worse. I think, that in German is the level better than in america.' Do you mean that movies are more adult in North America or in Germany?'
A few vocabulary notes:
'Recorded' should be 'filmed.'
'Strong rows,' should be 'straight rows.'
'Autocrazy' should be 'autocracy.'
'Roboter,' should be 'robot.'
Again, I am so impressed that you took the time to write this review, and that you have embraced the blog so completely. Keep up the good work!
thank you for your reply.

The pupils in the class were the victims. They were in the system. And after the speech the pupils were healed and normal like before the wave. I think the teacher was a little bit infected too.
About the movies in Germany and America: The movies/shows in Germany are not so hard. Children can't see such hard violence. For example at Sunday morning last week, I saw at my homestay "Scorpion King". This movie is about violence and fighters.
Such movies are to "hard" for children. In Germany, this movie is only allowed if you are 16 years old. The movie have to be streamed after 8:00pm and maybe strength violence scenes will be cut out.
